2015 | Performances of Around the World: Gungja (PARTS)

In October 2015, I was invited by the director of Performances of Around the World: Gungja (PARTS), Keyran Tan Bo Hao, to facilitate the last phase of the production. This process required me to write, direct and lead sessions with international students of Singapore Polytechnic.

One of the ideas that had originated from the participants' devising process was this war scene.

I proposed the use of cloth to demonstrate the burning theatrically.

The performance was an initiative by Singapore Polytechnic’s Singapore International Students’ Club.

In the 2 weeks leading up to the performance, I had reinterpreted the insights the director had gained from the international students’ play-making sessions into a cohesive 25-minute narrative. The playwriting process was creatively demanding as I had to weave the drama together with 9 other cultural performances. Even then, the script continued to evolve over the 2 week rehearsal as the other directors (Keyran Tan, Serene Loh and Esther Wong) added new ideas.

I had also facilitated the rehearsal process for the international students by directing and coaching the students’ performance to fit their comfort levels. (Many of whom had little or no performing background.)

This was the first production where I served the role as an external instructor. The process has been influential in my growth as a drama practitioner who has to be sensitive and ready to adapt to the needs of participants and the production.
