2018 - 2019 | Contemporary Dance || Sigma Contemporary Dance

Upon the completion of Full-Time National Service, I decided to take the plunge and explore a different performing art discipline. Having spent most time during my off-days from conscripted shift work at theatre shows and writing about them, I found myself being too cerebral about theatre.

I took Sigma Contemporary Dance’s 8-week Contemporary Dance Introductory Course thrice: October 2018; and then, two courses from January to May 2019.

Through the 1.5-hour sessions with Chiok, I got acquainted with my body. We engaged in release and control of various parts of the body. We also attempted simple Contemporary Dance choreography which included floorwork, spirals, lines and transfer of weight.

Looking at the dance reels of my first foray into dance are rough and painful to watch. Perhaps the biggest learning curve at that time was not only in learning the choreography but also, being able to control my body. The videos also provided me insight into these areas for growth and improvement.

A dance reel of the progress made in terms of remembering and following choreography - in time to the music!
